Inkling Explorations and Violets

There is a new literary link up starting at Heidi's author blog for lovers of good stories, and especially for those who love finding funny little details in stories.

This month's theme is violets!

It took me quite some time to think of a book where violets were mentioned (and I may have had to rely on Heidi's hints to possible stories), but I went with an excerpt from " By The Shores of Silver Lake" by Laura Ingalls Wilder:

"There was Grace! There in a great pool of blue sat Grace! the sun shone on her golden hair blowing in the wind. She looked up at Laura with big eyes as blue as violets. Her hands were full of violets. She held them up to Laura and said: "Sweet, sweet".
Laura sank down and took Grace in her arms. She held Grace carefully and panted for breath. Grace leaned over her arms to reach for more violets. They were surrounded by masses of violets blossoming above low spreading leaves. Violets covered the flat bottom of the large round hollow. All around this lake of violets, grassy banks rose almost straight up to the prarie level. there and around the low place the wind hardly disturbed the fragance of the violets.
The sun was warm there the sky was overhead the green walls of grass curved all around and butterflies fluttered over the crowding violet faces"

I always loved this chapter of the book with the wonderful description of a dreamy hollow of violets in the middle of the prarie.

For more scenes of violets check out the link-up at Heidi's blog.

  1. I vaguely remember that part -- Grace got lost, right? And everyone was frantic because they thought she fell in the well or the creek or something, but really she found a violet wonderland.

I love violets. I told my husband how, when I was a teen, I dug up every violet I could find and made a little bed of them under my bedroom window. He vowed to buy violet seeds and sow them in our lawn. Holding him to that!!!

    1. BTW, are you still thinking of writing a guest post about Meg for the read-along? If so, think you could have it done by next weekend, say the 6th?

    2. Yes, that's the one. Quite a bit of excitement in that chapter!

Yes, I am still working on the post of Meg. I was planning to finish it up this weekend, so that won't be a problem. I'll be sure to send it to you as soon as I'm done.

  3. Rose,
Such a gorgeous description! And story-wise, very striking -- going from all the tension where everyone's frantically hunting for Grace to that sudden, utter and complete peace of the violets carpeting the sun soaked buffalo wallow. Such an incredibly vivid moment.

I'm so happy you chose it!! ;D

  4. You know, I wanted to do the 'Inklings' thing and I had this exact same bookish section in mind! (Never mind though, you snatched it first, haha) - when I was younger Grace was my favourite character for several months (I often changed) and I LOVED that part. The violet patch always stayed with me. It must have been so beautiful! :-)

  5. Rose,
One of the most beautiful story scenes ever... As Heidi said above, the description of the utter quietude and restfulness of the violet-thick hollow is amazing in its power! I just decided that I must read these stories again soon. :)

  6. Oh, I always loved this scene too! It's so beautiful and I wish I could see it in real life.
By the way, I love your header. It's so elegant and I love the two black & white pictures-and that the moped is pink! :)

  7. Ah, such a lovely violet selection! I'd forgotten this scene. You know, the violets scavenger hunt just may make me notice the violets in literature from now on. :)
